The Naming Of Cats

さて「写真にタイトルを付けるのは難しい」で思い出すのがT.S.Eliotの詩です。
たしか伊丹十三が「再び女たちよ！」のなかで冒頭のパラグラフを紹介していた。
それを僕なりに訳してみたいと思います。

The Naming Of Cats by T.S.Eliot

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter—
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

猫に名前をつけるのは難しい
それはとても休日の
気楽な片手間仕事とは言えない
君は僕が気が狂っていると思うだろう
猫には三つの名前が必要だと言ったら

まずもって彼には家族用の名前が必要だ
ピーターとかアウグストゥスとかアロンソとかジェームズとか
ビクターとかヨナサンとかジョージとかビル・ベイリーとか
そういった名前はすべて
普段の呼び名として理にかなっている

もう少し愛らしくて凝った名前が欲しいなら
雄猫には雄猫の　雌猫には雌猫の
プラトーやアドミタス、エレクトラやデメテルなんてのもある
でも結局それらはみんな
普段用の名前と言っていいだろう

しかし猫にはそういった名前とはべつに
もっと特別な威厳のある名前が必要で
そうでなくては猫としても
尻尾を誇らしげにおっ立てたり
ひげをピンと伸ばして得意気になったりできなくて困るじゃないか？
少しばかり例を挙げるとすれば
ムンクストラプとかクワックソとかコリコパットとか
ボンバルリーナとか　えーとその　ジェリーローラムとか
まあそういったほかを探しても二つとない名前だよ

しかしもってなおさらだが
まだひとつ猫には名前が必要なのだ
そしてこれこそ君には思いつくはずもなく　そもそも人知を超えていて
猫は知っていても教えてはくれず
たまに彼らがもの思いにふけっているように見えるそんなとき
言っておくがそんなときはいつでも
まさに彼らは恍惚としてあることに思いを巡らせている
「僕の本当の名前はね　本当の名前はね　本当の名前はね･･･」
もう少しで言葉に出来そうで出来ない　出来なそうで出来そうな
底なしに神秘的ですばらしい
